Idiom ialah serangkaian kata yang di artikan sebagai satu kesatuan dan bila di artikan per kata mempunyai arti yang tidak sama dan tidak relevan. Itu lah mengapa memahami idiom bahasa Inggris terhitung susah bagi kebanyakan orang yang mencar ilmu bahasa Inggris.

Dialog 1 : A Foot in the Door

Judy : Hi, Gloria. I'm glad you called. I was about to call you.
Gloria : Really? Why?
Judy : I found out there's a job opening for an accountant in the company where I work. I thought you might be interested in it.
Gloria : I am. I'll call tomorrow morning and make an appointment for an interview.
Judy : You should get in touch with Mr. Prescott. He is in charge of the accounting departement.
Gloria : Thanks for telling me about the job.
Judy : I'm happy to help. After all, what are friends for?

Dari obrolan percakapan di atas, diberikut ini 5 idiom bahasa Inggris beserta contohnya.

Be about to
- They was about to leave the house when the phone rang.
- The students are coming into the classroom. The class is about to begin.
- We are closing our books. We are about to go home.

Find out
- How did you find out about the party? We wanted it to be a surprise.
- He didn't find out about the job opening until it was too late.
- The boy's mother always find out when he does something wrong.

Get in touch with
- Did you get in touch with Mary last night?
- My borhter usually get in touch with me about once a month.
- I finally got in touch with her yesterday.

Be in charge of
- Mrs. Jones was in charge of sales department from 1970 to 1978.
- Who is in charge of answering the telephone in this office.
- I am in charge of buying food for the picnic.

After all
- I'm not surprised that Richard lost his job. After all, he was late for work almost every day.
- Please don't leave the party now.

*Catatan
Pada idiom (be) about to dan (be) in charge of, kata (be) dalam idiom tersebut diganti dengan to be auxiliarry menyerupai am, is, are, was, were, atau been tergantung waktu dan pelakunya.
misal:
- I was about to call you.
- He is in charge of the accounting depertment.

Idiom (be) in charge of selalu diikuti oleh noun (kata benda) oleh alasannya yaitu itu sering juga diikuti oleh gerund (kata kerja bentuk yang menerima pemanis -ing untuk menjadikannya kata benda).
misal:
- He is in charge of opening the door of the hotel.

Idiom find out di atas sanggup juga dipakai dalam kalimat past tense dan bentuk negatif don't find out - didn't find out.
misal:
- I found out there's a job opening for an accountant.

Dialog 2 : First Things First

Toni : That teacher always finds fault with my compositions. I spent a lot of time on this one last week and now he wants me to do it over.
Jguat : What's the problem?
Toni : Some small mistakes, that's all. Look at my paper.
Jguat : These spelling errors do stand out. There shouldn't be a y in studies, and you forgot the second p in stopped.
Toni : I am not to blame. It's this crazy language! In my language, the spelling is very regular.
Jguat : English has a few basic rules, too. You'll be better off if you learn them.
Toni : It might be easier to go back to my country!

Dari percakapan di atas, diberikut di bawah ini yaitu 5 idiom bahasa Inggris diberikut contohnya:

Find fault with
- Why do you always find fault with my driving? I'm very careful.
- Jgua is very popular because she doesn't find fault with other people.
- I liked the movie, but Sam found fault with it. He thought it was boring.

Do something over
- The boss found some mistakes in the report, so she asked Mike to do them over.
- I din't iron my shirt very well the first time, so now I'm doing it over.
- Andy do the work over because he wanted it to be perfect.

Stand out
- Margaret is so beautiful that she stands out in a crowd.
- Robert really stood out in high school. He was an excellent student and a great athlete.
- We underline the important words so they will stand out.

(Be) to blame
- John was to blame for the accident. He was driving too fast.
- Peter thinks the president is to blame for unemployment.
- Parents are not always to blame for their children's bad behaviour.

(Be) better off
- Nick is better off now that he has full-time job.
- The city was better off when Harold Cooper was mayor.

*Catatan
Pada idiom do something over, dalam beberapa kalimat kata do pada idiom tersebut sering digantikan oleh kata kerja lain yang lebih spesifik.
misal :
- The secretary typed the letter over.
- The book was so good that I read it over.
